Job Summary

The School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is a partnership between the Faculties of Applied Science and Medicine, established in 2017. A Lab Supervisor position is available in the Rossi lab ) in the School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Our lab's goal is understand the mechanisms underpinning tissue regeneration and degeneration And use these knowledge to design therapeutic strategies for muscular dystrophy, volumetric muscle loss and cardiovascular disease. The candidate is expected to have lab management experience as well as technical skills to carry out molecular and cellular experiments as part of an active research project.

Organizational Status

Reports directly to the principal investigator, Dr. Fabio Rossi. The Lab Supervisor will manage all facets of daily operations, maintenance and finances of a research laboratory, including overseeing and managing workload assignments for junior staff and students of the laboratory

Work Performed

Lab Supervisory Duties:

  • Responsible for the daily operations of the research laboratory including maintaining laboratory equipment, vendors' account list and supply inventories and overseeing equipment repairs.
  • Maintains and enforces lab cleanliness and organization by monitoring common lab spaces, cleaning, organizing group cleaning activities, ensuring responsible parties are aware of their duties, coordinating freezers thaws, etc.
  • Sources new suppliers to account for supply chain issues and to search out better pricing as well as higher quality products.
  • Supports the development and documentation of laboratory operating procedures, such as SOPs for proper instrument use and a guidebook for new laboratory members (ex. pipette calibrations, LN2 tank usage).
  • Communicates lab safety guidelines to lab members. Ensuring all safety regulations and training are met, including working with UBC's Safety & Risk Services (SRS) as needed.
  • Schedules and monitoring waste removal by ensuring proper labeling and corresponding with other parties involved in the process (e.g. chemical, biological).
  • Participates in the UBC SBME local safety team.
  • Acts as liaison with SBME building staff on operational issues.
  • Manages the budget and forecasting of lab finances.
  • Manages laboratory biosafety and ethics certification, ensuring they are up to date and establishing new protocols and applications as needed.
  • Edits and proofs documents, including research grant applications, reporting documentation for funding agencies, student reports, manuscripts, fellowship applications, sponsored research agreements and other contracts with non-academic research collaborators.
  • Works closely with HR to facilitate appointments and reappointments for staff and students by providing appointment details, writing job descriptions, partaking in interviewing and onboarding processes and training new staff.
  • Responsible for personnel onboarding, ensuring enrollment and completion for mandatory courses.
  • Assists in offboarding departing lab members, ensuring a timely and complete transition of lab resources, lab notebooks, and experimental data to the lab.
  • Develops standard operating procedures for research methodology with support from lab scientists.
  • Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

Technical Duties:

  • Plans, designs, and conducts standard molecular and cell biology experiments on mammalian cell lines
  • Develops novel techniques and methodologies to achieve research goals, including developing and maintaining antibody panels for high content imaging.
  • Maintains common cell line stocks.
  • Extracts DNA, RNA.
  • Performs plasmid extractions for transfections.
  • Supports lab members in conducting and troubleshooting complex experiments
  • Analyses and compiles data in report preparation, presents results, and participates in the preparation of scientific manuscripts.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Decisions made in this position are crucial to the operation of the laboratory. Any errors made could jeopardize the experimental outcomes, damage the reputation of the laboratory and may also cease existing grant funding. Errors made by untimely ordering of supplies and organization of the lab's stock could jeopardize the labs operational efficiency.

Supervision Received

Supervised by Principal Investigator, Dr. Fabio Rossi, under minimal supervision. The Lab Supervisor must employ considerable amount of independence, judgment, responsibility and initiative to manage their workload effectively and oversee the unit's daily activities.

Supervision Given

The incumbent will be responsible for supervising and training junior staff and students. Also responsible for providing advice on recruitment and performance evaluation of junior staff and students.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of a university degree in a relevant discipline or technical program and a minimum four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require a graduate degree.

Demonstrated experience working in a laboratory setting is required. The successful candidate will be a passionate, self-driven, independent thinker with excellent organizational, oral, and written communication, excellent interpersonal skills, and a strong work ethic.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in Life Sciences preferred.
  • Previous lab management experience preferred.
  • Experience working with trainees.
  • Preference will be given to experimental candidates who have skills in high content imaging and associated tissue harvesting and processing.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to be thorough, accurate, and have a high level of attention to detail.
  • Interpersonal and organization skills as well as the ability to accept responsibility.
  • Ability to create and enhance a collaborative environment.
