Job Synopsis

Thrift Team Members are the driving force for the sorting and pricing of donated items from receiving to the retail floor. This salaried full-time position will be focused in receiving but will partner with the entire team to create an efficient, customer focused Thrift Shop.

Demonstrating a positive attitude, Thrift Team Members will provide active, hands-on support, direction, and training to volunteers, ensuring a safe work environment.

This Team Member role will be responsible for working with the management team to create systems that lead to efficiencies within receiving, developing strategies to meet revenue and production targets, providing support, leadership, supervision, training, scheduling, and annual check-ins for volunteers in receiving, providing day-to-day support and oversight of part-time Team Members in receiving.

Required

  • Ability to create a positive, welcoming atmosphere within the shop, balancing patience, creativity, humour, and energy.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with people of all ages and backgrounds, displaying a sensitivity and awareness of cultural, racial, economic, and socially diverse communities.
  • Ability to relate well with a wide range of people and be comfortable in communication with volunteers, staff, the public, and volunteer groups of all ages.
  • Self-motivated. Able to take initiative and make quick and thoughtful decisions while working with a team of staff and volunteers.
  • Excel in a fast-paced environment, able to balance competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Excellent oral communication in English. Good written communication in English.
  • Commitment to the operating principles of MCC Thrift and the values of MCC including a heart for justice and active peacemaking.
  • Basic working knowledge of MS Office programs including Outlook and Word.
  • Able to work non-standard hours, including evenings and Saturdays.
  • Able to lift 50 lbs. and exert 11 to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
  • Able to spend 7.5 or more hours of intermittent standing or walking in a standard workday.
  • Able to repeatedly bend or stoop to floor level shelves and able to reach upper shelves with the use of a stool or a ladder when necessary.
  • Valid 'G' Ontario driver's license

  • Awareness of second-hand market operations and trends.
  • Knowledge of antiques, collectibles, and brand recognition

Key Responsibilities

General

  • Serve as a brand advocate and ambassador for MCC in every interaction with customers and donors.
  • Contribute to a customer centric culture in all interactions with customers, donors, volunteers, and colleagues.
  • Provide active, hands-on support to volunteers while creating a calm and fun atmosphere.
  • Have a task plan ready for volunteers each day to ensure that daily production goals and quotas are met.
  • Operate the Point-of-Sale terminals, troubleshooting or documenting issues when necessary.
  • Handle customer, donor and volunteer questions, concerns, and conflicts in a professional manner.
  • Provide back-up support for other staff in their absence, or as needed, including opening and closing of the shop (cash registers, daily reconciliations, etc.)

Health & Safety

  • Proactively support volunteers with reminders of proper lifting techniques, and the provision of tools to help with heavy lifting.
  • Adhere to Health & Safety Guidelines as established by law and the organization.
  • Be proactive in maintaining clean workspaces that meet health & safety standards, in the workroom and on the retail floor.

Other

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
  • Assist with special events and projects as needed.
  • Participate in MCCO orientations, provincial meetings, Peace Conference and Staff Development Days.
  • Participate in a local faith community, being willing to use your personal gifts within this community.
  • Model nonviolent peacemaking through respectful daily interactions with staff and the public.
  • Maintain a high level of integrity, reflecting Christian respect and Christ's unconditional love to those with whom you work, including colleagues, partner agencies, the homeless and the marginalized.
  • Communicate MCC's values to customers, volunteers and donors.

Salary Details

Base salary: $51,628. This role starts on day 1 with a company paid benefit package
