Locum Consultant Haematologist

Job Description

This is a 12 month fixed term full-time post based at both Peterborough City Hospital and Hinchingbrooke Hospital, which is part of North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust which was formed in April 2017 following a merger of Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Hinchingbrooke Healthcare Trust.

The post holder will be expected to provide sessions at both hospitals to deliver Outpatient clinics, Day Unit, and Inpatient care of patients with both malignant and non-malignant haematological disorders. Duties will include offering Consultative Haematology services to other hospital clinicians and general practitioners and to provide Laboratory Haematology cover.

Main duties of the job

To join a busy and innovative department and Haematology team and provide clinical haematology care in the outpatient, inpatient and day unit setting. Support the management of patients in MDT. Work with colleagues within the trust and primary care to ensure timely care of patients. The role also includes laboratory responsibilities, support for clinical governance and audit, and education and training.

North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust was formed in April 2017. We run three acute sites Peterborough City, Hinchingbrooke and Stamford and Rutland Hospitals. In addition, we deliver outpatient and radiology services at Doddington Hospital, the Princess of Wales Hospital, Ely, and North Cambridgeshire Hospital, Wisbech.

We deliver acute care services to a growing catchment of approximately 850,000 residents living in Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and the neighbouring counties of Norfolk and Bedfordshire.

Job responsibilities

The appointee will have the opportunity to revise their job plan in consultation with consultant colleagues. The job plan equates to 9 PAs (7.5 Direct Clinical Care and 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities). The DCC includes participation on the acute haematology on call rota which is currently a 1:7 rota.

At present, all consultant haematologists treat the full range of haematological conditions.

There will be a 1 in 7 on-call commitment for both Laboratory and Clinical Haematology at NWAFT. At weekends, it is expected that the consultant will conduct daily ward rounds at PCH to expedite clinical decision-making and allow prompt discharge of well patients. Clinical responsibilities

To provide clinical haematology care including outpatient, day care and in-patient review.

To take part and discuss the management of patients with malignant haematological diseases at the Network Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings.

To deal with any clinical haematology referrals from clinical colleagues from other disciplines (medical, surgical, obstetric etc.).

To deal with Inpatient referrals, Choose and Book referrals and Advice & Guidance requests from General Practitioners.

Laboratory Responsibilities

To provide laboratory services including blood film and marrow review, laboratory, anticoagulant and transfusion support.

To provide clinical liaison for service users from hospital and community teams.

To take all measures to ensure consistently high standards of performance are achieved and maintained in the laboratories.

To collaborate with the biomedical scientists and other members of the laboratory staff.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

• Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the GMC (or eligible for registration within six months of interview)


• Applicants that are UK trained must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.


• Applicants that are non-UK trained will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT


• Possession of both FRCPath or equivalent and MRCP or equivalent qualifications

Clinical Experience

• Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Haematology


• Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of Haematological conditions


• Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients

Management and administrative experience

• Ability to organise and manage daily working priorities


• Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance framework and targets


• Experience of audit


• Management training course

Other

• Ability to work in a team


• Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, GPs, nurses, and other agencies

Teaching Experience

• Experience of supervising FY1's and ST's


• Ability to teach clinical skills


• Formal Training/teaching course

Research Experience

• Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems


• Publications in peer-reviewed journals
