Instrumentation and Control Engineer
Job Description
VTEK Consultants Inc. is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Instrumentation and Control Engineer to support multidisciplinary engineering projects within the petrochemical and industrial sectors. The ideal candidate will be responsible for developing, reviewing, and optimizing instrumentation and control system designs, ensuring alignment with project requirements, industry standards, and client expectations. This position involves cross-functional collaboration, technical leadership during manufacturing and commissioning phases, and active participation in the continuous improvement of engineering practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop instrumentation and control systems for industrial and petrochemical facilities.
- Prepare and validate engineering documents, including P&IDs, instrumentation datasheets, loop diagrams, wiring diagrams, and control narratives.
- Specify field instruments, control valves, analyzers, and related equipment based on process and project requirements.
- Review and update control system architectures, PLC/SCADA layouts, and communication networks.
- Develop instrument indexes, I/O lists, and associated documentation packages.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable standards (ISA, API, CSA, NEC, IEC, etc.).
- Collaborate with process, electrical, and mechanical teams to ensure optimal integration of instrumentation and control systems.
- Review vendor documentation and integrate supplier data into engineering deliverables.
- Provide technical support during manufacturing, FAT/SAT, installation, and commissioning activities.
- Implement minor design modifications to improve system reliability, safety, and maintainability.
- Participate in hazard reviews, risk assessments, and troubleshooting sessions.
- Contribute to knowledge sharing and continuous improvement within the engineering team.
- Use engineering and design software such as AutoCAD, SPI/INtools, EPLAN, SmartPlant, or equivalent tools.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation & Control, Automation Engineering, or related field.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in instrumentation and control engineering in the petrochemical, industrial, or energy sectors.
- Strong expertise with instrumentation design tools (e.g., SPI/INtools).
- Solid understanding of industrial control systems, PLCs/DCS, communication protocols, and safety instrumented systems.
- Experience with hazardous area classifications and intrinsic safety concepts.
- Ability to read and develop wiring diagrams, loop sheets, control schematics, and panel layouts.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) in English; French is a strong asset.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in multidisciplinary environments.
