About The Branch


The Wildland Fire Management (WFM) branch contributes to protection of people and property and the development of sustainable, fire‑resilient Yukon communities and infrastructure.


About The Role


Reporting to a Senior Emergency Response Officer within the Incident Management team, this position plays a key role in Yukon’s wildfire and emergency response operations. The Emergency Response Officer is regularly assigned to regions to serve as a Duty Officer or to fill senior command or specialist roles on incidents, with deployments lasting up to 14 consecutive days.


In this role, you will support the planning, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of wildfire management activities across the territory. You will directly manage and supervise a wide range of resources - including personnel, equipment, and aircraft - while acting as a Yukon or Regional Duty Officer or Incident Commander. The position contributes to the effective delivery of detection, pre‑suppression, suppression, and prevention programs.


Emergency Response Officers also lead and participate on territorial incident management teams, helping to ensure firefighter safety and protect lives, communities, infrastructure, and other valued assets. This work supports Yukon’s efforts to reduce wildfire impacts and mitigate losses on both Crown and private lands during wildfire events and other emergency incidents.


Essential Qualifications



  • Experience managing resources (i.e. personnel, equipment and aircraft) on wildland fire incidents in a leadership or supervisory capacity.

  • Recent experience supervising staff including managing interpersonal conflict, performing administrative supervisory duties, and ensuring work is carried out safely within OH&S regulations.

  • Recent experience as wildfire Duty Officer.

  • A degree or diploma in natural resource management, risk management, wildfire, or a related field is considered an asset.

  • Management, interpersonal and conflict resolution skills

  • Proficiency in the use of computers and programs such as MS Word, Excel, Outlook

  • Comprehensive knowledge of OH&S regulations and related safe work practices

  • Strong written and oral communications skills

  • Ability to assess risk, and financial implications and make sound decisions when responding to wildfires

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the incident command system

  • Experience and qualifications in leadership and specialist roles on wildland fire incidents

  • Ability to work independently

  • Ability to develop and deliver training for/to Wildland Fire Management staff


This position requires travel to remote locations by road, rotary-wing aircraft, fixed-wing aircraft, and off-road vehicles.


Additional Information



  • Pass and maintain Medical Clearance (PARQ/PAR‑MEDX)

  • Valid Yukon Class 5 Driver’s License (or equivalent)


Job Requirements



  • Valid Standard First Aid with CPR “C” certification (wilderness first aid with CPR “C” also acceptable)

  • TDG Air and Ground Certificate

  • WHMIS certificate

  • Restricted Operator Certificate with Aeronautical Qualification (ROC-A)

  • Pass and maintain moderate fitness test

  • Working and living in remote locations under rudimentary conditions for extended periods of time

  • Travelling in helicopters and small fixed wing aircrafts

  • Must be available with limited notice according to the standby schedule during the fire season for emergency response, including working evenings and weekends as required

  • Willingness to travel to other locations within Yukon and Canada while conducting incident management roles
