Job Summary

The Clinical Extern is a supernumerary, unionized position within CUPE created to enhance patient care and support day-to-day unit operations Working as an Unregulated Health Care Provider (UCP), the Clinical Extern collaborates closely with the unit's nursing team to contribute to a safe and supportive care environment.

Under the direct and/or indirect supervision of an assigned Registered Nursing professional, the Clinical Extern performs supportive clinical and non-clinical tasks consistent with their training, competence, and scope as an unregulated provider. In accordance with the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA) of Ontario, Clinical Externs may also carry out pre-identified Controlled Acts authorized to nursing when these activities are appropriately delegated by a supervising nurse who is permitted to perform them.

Key Accountabilities

• Supports the completion of unit activities and tasks appropriate for an Unregulated Care Provider (UCP), under direct or indirect supervision of a nursing professional.

• Collaborates with unit nurses to ensure they have the knowledge, skills, and judgment required to perform their duties effectively.

• Helps with lifting, turning, transferring, transporting and ambulating as per the hospital policy.

• Provides basic care measures to maintain skin integrity and prevent pressure injuries, in alignment with care plans and nursing direction.

• Supports activities that promote skin integrity and reduce pressure injuries, such as offloading pressure on specific areas of the body and reporting skin issues to registered staff.

• Assists with comfort measures and patient safety by ensuring the environment is clean and tidy and free of hazards.

• Requests assistance with assigned duties whenever in need.

• Demonstrates excellent problem-solving, decision-making, and critical thinking skills in daily activities.

• Demonstrates strong organizational and time-management skills to support efficient unit operations.

• Participates as a team member.

• Contributes to a transparent culture of client and staff safety by adhering to all safety policies and procedures established by St. Joseph's Health Centre Guelph (SJHCG).

• Engages in nursing learning opportunities to enhance clinical knowledge, skills, and professional development.

• Promotes and supports change initiatives using principles of change leadership to enhance care quality and team performance.

Qualifications & Experience

• Nursing Students enrolled in their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of a CNO approved baccalaureate or diploma nursing program.

• Demonstrated evidence of excellent academic standing.

• Current certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support required.

• Completion of mandatory/required certifications provided via corporate orientation, including extern orientation, and as defined by unit (e.g., Fit Test, WHIMS, AODA, IP&C).

• Demonstrated infection prevention and control practices.

• Effective interpersonal and communication skills.

• Successful completion of a recent clinical placement in an acute care area preferred.

• Students who have successfully completed a recent clinical placement preferred.
