Job Description
Ready to build your career? We want to hear from you.
As the Chief Surveyor within the Civil and Infrastructure team at Pomerleau, you will lead our surveying operations and ensure the highest standards of accuracy and efficiency across our major projects. Working on large‑scale civil and infrastructure initiatives—ranging from $15 million to more than $1 billion—you will bring technical expertise, strategic oversight, and strong leadership to support successful project delivery.
What you will do
- Lead and oversee all surveying activities for multiple civil and infrastructure projects, ensuring precise layout and accurate as‑built documentation.
- Provide advanced setup and operation of total station, GPS, and other instruments, while guiding survey teams on best practices and technical parameters (EDM settings, prism constants, instrument calibration, etc.).
- Review, validate, and consolidate survey data, ensuring accurate preparation of drawings, charts, plans, and construction documentation.
- Apply expert-level coordinate geometry and comprehensive understanding of horizontal and vertical plane relationships within IFC drawings.
- Ensure proper application of geodesy principles, UTM grid systems, and translations to local ground coordinate systems for all project teams.
- Direct the configuration and use of surveying instruments and layout software; uphold data management standards, file formats, and departmental workflows for efficient processing.
- Champion and enforce safety procedures through our 5360 policy, ensuring all survey work meets company safety standards; oversee team participation in eCompliance for hazard analysis and safety observations.
- Provide clear and timely reporting to project managers and stakeholders, including site status updates, progress monitoring, and recommendations for survey scope adjustments.
- Manage, clean, and validate field data using cloud‑based data presentation tools; ensure accuracy before integration with project models and systems.
- Mentor and supervise survey team members, supporting skills development, performance, and workload planning.
- Collaborate with construction leadership to anticipate project survey requirements, resolve technical challenges, and ensure layout strategies align with project objectives.
This role could be for you if you have
- 7–10+ years of construction surveying experience on major civil/infrastructure projects, including progressively senior responsibilities;
- Strong leadership skills with experience supervising or mentoring survey personnel;
- Exceptional ability to interpret complex civil, structural, and architectural drawings;
- Advanced technical proficiency with total stations, GPS equipment, layout software, and survey data management tools;
- High attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple simultaneous survey operations independently;
- Experience with GPS technical support for marine or machine control—an asset;
- A post‑secondary degree or diploma in Geospatial, Geoscience, Engineering Technology, or a related discipline—an asset;
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across project teams;
- Adaptability to work varying hours based on project needs and field conditions
