JOB SUMMARY: The Native Inmate Liaison Officer reports to and receives direction from the Justice Director.
PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION:
The Native Inmate Liaison Officer (NILO) will be directly accountable to the Six Nations Justice Department Director. The Native Inmate Liaison (NILO) provides leadership, cultural awareness, peer counselling and other services to the Indigenous offenders. They are the link between the offenders and Indigenous communities. The Native Inmate Liaison Officer (NILO) helps ensure the offender's culture and spiritual needs are understood and met.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Two-year social worker diploma with 3-5 years of front line experience in human services.
- Minimum 3 years of experience working with Indigenous organizations or with First Nations community.
OTHER PREFERRED SKILLS:
- Excellent communication, critical thinking and interpersonal skills.
- Has excellent report writing skills.
- Flexibility and adaptability in fast paced environment
- High level understanding of the mainstream legal and court system.
- High level of communication skills; Interoffice, telephone and written.
- Computer skills; Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher.
- Strong level of organizational skills for self.
- Must be a team-oriented player.
- Has a valid G license.
- Possess research and data collection skills.
- Possess Critical Incident stress debriefing skills.
- Aware of Six Nations community and services available in the area.
- Possess the ability to adapt and relate effectively with people of all ages.
- Will participate in recommended training.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Native Inmate Liaison Officer
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
The NILO reports to and receives direction from the Justice Director.
PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION:
The Native Inmate Liaison Officer (NILO) will be directly accountable to the Six Nations Justice Department Director. The Native Inmate Liaison (NILO) provides leadership, cultural awareness, peer counselling and other services to the Indigenous offenders. They are the link between the offenders and Indigenous communities. The Native Inmate Liaison Officer (NILO) helps ensure the offender's culture and spiritual needs are understood and met.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
TECHNICAL
- Coordination of cultural awareness workshops conducted by self and/or with other community resources.
- Coordination of spiritual components conducted by self and/or with other community resources.
- Assist in supporting the Elder/Spiritual Advisor in their work with Indigenous offenders.
- To act as a liaison to facilitate communication between Indigenous inmates, their families, institutional staff and other community resources.
- Prepare and submit regular verbal and written reports pertaining to program activities and clients to the Six Nations Justice Department and the corrections institution.
- Assist in helping inmates' transition back to their communities
ADMINISTRATIVE
- Represent Six Nations Justice Department at inter-agency meetings when appropriate
- Keep monthly program statistics.
- Create monthly activity reports.
COMMUNICATION
- Ensures confidentially is maintained
- Keeps the Justice Director apprised of activities on a weekly basis both verbally and in written weekly and monthly reports.
- Provide statistical reports and recommendations
- General understanding of communication procedures within an office setting
OTHER RELATED DUTIES
- Performs other job-related duties as may reasonably be required by the Justice Director.
- Attend and participate in scheduled training as directed by immediate supervisor.

- Work requires physical activity and mental stress; requires working inside and outside, requires travel, requires extensive interactions with the public, who at times may be hostile or irate, subject to interruptions, deadlines and unscheduled hours.

With the Six Nations Justice Department Director
Receives direction, guidance and discusses plans, priorities to ensure tasks are done efficiently and effectively, receives instruction and supervision.
With Department Staff
Liaises, cooperates and provides encouragement ; maintains control through teamwork and direction.
With other Staff
Maintains cooperation and consideration with all staff.
With External Agencies
Represents and promotes Six Nations interests relative to the Justice Program and maintains awareness of legislative policy and program changes; seeks to develop sound professional working relationships
With the Public
Represents and promotes the Justice Program interests of Six Nations; works in a courteous manner, co-operative, positive and proactive manner, provides information as requested.

Errors in judgement and in the conduct of duties could lead to loss of credibility, poor public relation, confusion, duplication of effort and misinformation being given to the Director of Health Services, Health Committee, Six Nations Council, Government Agencies and the public.
