Principal Responsibilities:

  • P&L responsibility and accountability for the Commercial Packaged Gases and Bulk business as well as the Hard Goods and Safety Products in Canada in accordance with the delegations of authority:

  • Drive business performance to achieve or exceed expected results by ensuring that business in scope is optimised and provides the best possible return to Messer.
  • Develop and implement sales and market strategies for all products and services in scope.
  • Work with the Tonnage group for the on-site opportunity in Canada.
  • Drive packaged gas operations to produce on time and on spec a variety of packaged gases and implement technology to ensure that the cost base is optimised.
  • Manage and mitigate identified risks associated with the business in scope.
  • Manage unplanned events at local operations in scope to minimise impact on customers, personnel, business performance and the community.

  • Responsible for future development and growth of the businesses through:

  • Work closely with his marketing team to establish market segment strategy, including new products, customer communication, PSO enhancements and pricing decisions for cost recovery are to be prioritized by this role.
  • Understanding and capitalising on economic and market trends and conditions that impact customers in scope.
  • Implementation of strategic plans for markets and/or account strategies for customers in scope, including acting as the conduit for business development activities
  • Identification and recommendation on potential acquisitions, capital expenditures and long-term direction of the business
  • People management & champion of safety:

  • Ensure that human resources are trained, developed and managed effectively and that each market and business function in the market has sufficient, competent people to take the business forward.
  • Drive safety agenda to ensure that the company operates in a manner that is safe for our employees, customers and the public at large.
  • Ensure that the company operates ethically and with due regard to the environment within which it operates.
  • Responsible for organizational effectiveness through:

  • Designing and implementing a business organization structure to deliver the strategy.
  • Creating an environment of high performance and continuous improvement.
  • Maintaining high level of communication and understanding of the strategies, objectives, and tactics of the business at all levels of the organization.
  • Member of the Board of directors of Messer Canada.
  • Managing legal cases involving Messer Canada customer or vendor with support of legal department.

Required Key Skills (functional/technical):

  • Requires an in-depth knowledge of the compressed business, including a thorough understanding of the economic/commercial/political issues affecting the industry in Canada.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of sales processes, products and service offers of the Messer group.
  • Financial knowledge and skills.
  • Knowledge of Messer Group strategy and philosophy.
  • Managerial skills:

  • Strong leadership skills
  • Skilled in managing the diversity that comes from a geographically and culturally diversified organization.
  • Experience managing account management and branch operations personnel.
  • Demonstrated ability to encourage employees to provide superior customer satisfaction in a team environment across multiple disciplines.
  • Thorough understanding of general management principles
  • Involvement in the ESG journey. Interpersonal skills:

  • Self-motivated and performance orientation
  • Strong ability to think strategically and to contribute to the development of business strategy to manage a profit/loss account.
  • Goal oriented – able to translate strategy into actionable goals and tactics.

Basic Requirements:

  • University degree required, Masters an asset
  • Minimum of 15 years’ demonstrated success at management level with functional experience in sales, strategy/planning, marketing and operations and people leadership experience in a similar industrial environment
  • Commercial development experience preferred.
  • Broad industry knowledge and knowledge of all aspects of the business including enabling functions.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in a team environment.
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills
