Job Description
The Thrift Store Worker provides service to customers, sorts incoming product and assists in the ongoing retail operations of The Salvation Army Fort McMurray Thrift Store.
Accountabilities
Operations
- Contributes to meeting store sales budgets by maintaining customer service standards.
- Interacts with customers/donors in a positive, friendly, and courteous manner.
- Implements store layout plans to attract customers including window displays and merchandise displays.
- Maintains an attractive organized appearance of the store, tidy up and restock shelves, clean, sweep, dust and mop as necessary.
- Replenishes inventory levels based on Supervisor’s directions.
- Contributes to the control of inventory by retrieving, sorting, and pricing as per directions.
- Protects the store from inventory shrinkage by close visual monitoring.
- Takes responsibility for the accurate completion of all customer transactions including visa, debit, etc.
- Processes raw materials by loading/unloading, sorting, packing, pricing and storing donations.
- Possesses knowledge of stock to respond to customer enquiries by phone or in person.
- Contributes to the control of inventory by receiving, sorting, and pricing as per directions.
- Removes inventory from the sales floor as directed.
- Maintains the proper sorting and processing of all donated goods, ensuring compliance with quality standards.
- Abides by store policy and procedures.
Communication
- Informs their supervisor of all customer complaints, comments and concerns regarding customer service, prices, merchandise, etc.
Health And Safety
- Contributes to the safety of staff and customers (e.g., snow removal, clear fire exits and clean spillage).
- Handles merchandise in a safe and organized manner; assists in stock rotation – "baling" items in the store.
In Absence Of The Supervisor
- Daily cash out and securing of float and deposit.
- Assists with supervision of volunteers.

- Performs other position related duties as required.
Managerial/Technical Responsibilities
- This position reports directly to the Thrift Store Supervisor.
- Direct reports: none.
Financial And Material Management
- Responsible for handling cash and debit sales.
- Contributes to store budgets by maintaining customer service standards.
- Assists with the materials management of donations/product flow in the thrift store.
Education, Qualifications And Certifications
- Completion of Secondary School.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Experience And Skilled Knowledge Requirements
- Have a minimum of three (3) months of prior related experience.
- Cash handling experience is required.
- Knowledge and experience using a cash register, debit machine and/or credit card processing is a definite asset.
Skills And Capabilities
- Develop an understanding of the Mission of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
- Maintain information in confidence as required.
- Participate as an active and responsible team member.
- Participate in mandatory orientation training.
- Participate in regular supervision and performance appraisal process.
- Represent the organization in a professional and engaging manner.
- Must comply with all Salvation Army policies and procedures and associated legislation.
- Brand awareness would be an asset.
- Ability to stand for long periods with frequent twisting, bending, crouching and reaching is required. Ability to lift/move up to 30 lbs.
- Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral/written communication skills and respect authority.
- Self‑motivated/disciplined.
- Represent The Salvation Army in a positive manner.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
- The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures in addition to health and safety rules and regulations such as universal precautions, i.e., wearing gloves when working with unknown contents.

- Ability to work in a cooperative team‑oriented atmosphere.
- Provide an original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.
- May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
- Support for and an understanding of the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada.
There are two permanent part‑time positions at 25 hours per week available. Shifts will typically be scheduled Thursday to Saturday, and work schedule may vary from week to week and will include weekdays and/or Saturdays.
The pay rate for this position is $17.39 per hour.
Compensation
The target hiring range for this position is $17.39 to $21.73 with a maximum of $26.08. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
