Job Summary
ConocoPhillips is recruiting Power Engineer students to support our Surmont facility for a 4-6-month term, starting in May 2026. Power Engineer students assist plant and process operators throughout daily operating conditions, shadowing them to learn the routine operation of the plant. Students also record and report temperature, pressure, flows and any abnormal issues in the SAGD Facility according to process conditions.
The positions will be based at our Surmont Facility, located south of Fort McMurray, and will be on a 14 on 14 off rotational work schedule. Students are required to work both day and night shifts during their work term. Transportation to and from site, as well as camp accommodation will be provided by the Company.
Responsibilities
Position Overview
- Support and comply with the policies, goals, efforts, and programs of CPC's Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Management System. Ensure HSE issues are given primary consideration in all activities undertaken within area of responsibility. Unsafe acts and/or conditions, no matter in what area of responsibility, are to be reported so corrective actions can be taken
- Assists the other operators when required
- Assists with the routine collection of operating data, temperatures, pressures and levels, making appropriate electronic log-book entries
- Follows the plant training plan
- Support and maintain KPIs (key performance indicators) relevant to Steam Plant operation
- Operates the units under training, monitoring and adjusting unit controls auxiliary equipment and multiple processing units during processing or treating operations to ensure safe and efficient operating conditions
- Assists Operators with troubleshooting on control issues, plant upsets and equipment breakdowns
- Maintains continuous radio contact with the Control Room and Shift Lead to keep them informed of whereabouts
- Advise Control Room of operating conditions and reports abnormal situations, incidents etc.
- Maintains communication with maintenance staff regarding daily activities to ensure safe operations in area of responsibility
- Responsible for the daily duties which include assisting area operators in their duties as defined in the daily plan
- Conduct routine housekeeping duties
- Student Operator is a training position and is to be utilized and exposed to all areas of the facilities to gain familiarity with the daily operations.
Required Qualifications
- Pursuing a diploma in Power Engineering Technology
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale
- A valid Class 5 driver’s license
- Must be legally permitted to work in Canada on a full-time basis without restrictions
