Job Description

Join us for an exciting opportunity at the AESO, where you'll support the technical foundations that help shape Alberta's evolving electricity market. The AESO is mandated to design and operate electricity markets to deliver the safe, reliable, and economic operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System (AIES) and to facilitate fair, efficient, and openly competitive outcomes.

The Modelling team within our Grid Reliability division is looking for a full-time Summer Student to join our team for a 4‑month term, May to August 2026. In this position, you will gain hands-on experience under the guidance of senior technical specialists. You will contribute to building and improving the data repositories, structures, and automation tools that power our system modelling and key reliability initiatives. This is a great opportunity for a computer science student eager to work on real data challenges with real system impact.

Key accountabilities:

  • Support the design, development, and enhancement of modelling data repositories and database structures used in system reliability studies.
  • Build and improve data workflows, pipelines, and interfaces that increase the accuracy, accessibility, and consistency of modelling data.
  • Develop scripts or tools to automate data processing, validation, and integration tasks.
  • Contribute to the development of data exchange interfaces between modelling systems and other internal databases.
  • Work with engineers and technical specialists to understand data requirements and ensure modelling data is organized and usable for key AESO initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of at least third‑year coursework in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, or a related program.
  • Experience with Microsoft SharePoint and Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI)
  • Experience with database design, SQL, and/or NoSQL systems.
  • Programming experience with Python, SQL, or similar languages.
  • Understanding of power systems or the electricity industry is an asset but not required.
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a customer‑service mindset.
  • Positive attitude, willingness to learn, and initiative to propose creative or efficient solutions.
  • Ability to manage confidential information with professionalism and integrity.
  • Availability to work full‑time from May to August 2026.
