Job Description

The role supports customers, sorts incoming products, and assists the ongoing retail operations of a Salvation Army Thrift Store. The position starts at provincial minimum wage, with opportunities for annual increases, and is a permanent full‑time role.

Responsibilities

• Greet and interact with customers and donors positively and courteously.


• Assist with sales, ensuring accurate cash and debit transactions and minimal voids or shortages.


• Process donations: load, unload, sort, pack, hang, price, and store items while protecting inventory integrity.


• Maintain store opening and closing procedures, including security, cleanliness, and merchandising displays.


• Contribute to meeting store sales targets and inventory control.


• Adhere to store policy on cheques, credit cards, refunds, voids, and holds.


• Follow health and safety guidelines, including lifting 30 lbs and wearing gloves when needed.

Critical Relationship Management

Internal: Store Manager, Corps Officer(s), volunteers, staff.

External: Guests, vendors.

Managerial/Technical Responsibilities

Reports directly to the Store Manager. No direct reports.

Working Conditions

• Permanent full-time position with a variable schedule (weekdays, evenings, weekends).


• Requires frequent standing, bending, twisting, crouching, and lifting up to 30 lbs.


• Safety shoes are required at all times in all store locations.

Education & Experience

• Completion of some high‑school coursework.


• Experience in processing or distribution of goods, or customer service.


• Knowledge of lifting guidelines; ability to use a computerized environment.


• Willingness to develop an understanding of The Salvation Army’s mission and purpose.

Skills & Capabilities

• Attention to detail; self‑motivated and disciplined.


• Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills.


• Ability to work independently and as part of a cooperative team.


• Physically capable of lifting up to 30 lbs on a frequent basis.

Compensation

The target hiring range is $16.50 to $16.90 per hour, with a maximum of $20.28. Placement considers market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications.
