Position Summary
The Shop Machinist (Foreman) is responsible for overseeingdaily machine shop operations while performing advanced machining andfabrication work. This role includes operating a variety of manual andprecision machine tools, coordinating shop workflow, supervising shoppersonnel, and ensuring quality, safety, and productivity standards aremaintained.
The Foreman provides leadership and technical expertise inmachining, welding, equipment repair, and custom fabrication while supportingproduction needs and maintaining equipment reliability.
Key Responsibilities
Machining & Fabrication
- Operate and set upmanual machine tools including:
- Milling machines
- Horizontal boring mills
- Drill presses
- Line boring equipment
- Perform precisionmachining of parts, shafts, housings, and components to specifiedtolerances.
- Repair or manufacturereplacement parts for field equipment and production machinery.
- Conduct internal andexternal thread cutting, boring, facing, turning, drilling, and tappingoperations.
- Perform line boringoperations for equipment rebuilds and structural repairs.
- Interpret mechanicaldrawings, blueprints, and sketches to produce components.
- Verify dimensions andtolerances using precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, boregauges, dial indicators).
- Select proper tooling,speeds, and feeds for materials such as steel, stainless, aluminum, andspecialty alloys.
Welding & Fabrication
- Perform weldingprocesses including:
- MIG welding
- TIG welding
- Stick welding
- Fabricate customcomponents, jigs, fixtures, and repair parts.
- Conduct repairs toequipment and shop infrastructure.
- Prepare materials bycutting, grinding, and fitting prior to welding.
- Inspect welds forstructural integrity and quality.
- Coordinate daily machineshop workflow and job priorities.
- Supervise shopmachinists, welders, and apprentices as assigned.
- Assign tasks and ensurejobs are completed efficiently and accurately.
- Provide technicalguidance and mentorship to shop personnel.
- Monitor projecttimelines and ensure work meets company standards.
- Communicate withmanagement regarding workload, scheduling, and equipment requirements.
Maintenance & Equipment Management
- Maintain machine shopequipment including lathes, mills, and boring machines.
- Perform routinemaintenance and troubleshooting of shop machinery.
- Coordinate major repairsor service when required.
- Maintain toolinginventory and ensure proper storage and handling.
- Order tooling, cuttinginserts, and shop consumables as needed.
Quality Control
- Inspect finishedcomponents for accuracy and conformance to specifications.
- Maintain high standardsof workmanship and precision.
- Identify machiningissues and implement corrective actions.
- Maintain documentationrelated to work orders and completed jobs.
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure shop operationsfollow all safety regulations and company policies.
- Maintain safe operationof equipment and enforce proper PPE usage.
- Conduct hazardassessments and maintain clean work areas.
- Ensure proper handlingand storage of materials and tools.
- Promote a safety-firstculture in the shop environment.
Typical Daily Activities
- Reviewing work ordersand job priorities.
- Setting up and operatingmachining equipment.
- Fabricating or repairingparts for production or field equipment.
- Supervising shoppersonnel and coordinating work assignments.
- Troubleshootingmachining problems and adjusting setups.
- Measuring and inspectingcompleted parts.
- Maintaining tools,machines, and shop organization.
- Communicating progressupdates with management.
Requirements
Required Qualifications
- Journeyman Machinistcertification or equivalent experience preferred.
- Extensive experienceoperating manual machine tools.
- Strong welding andfabrication skills.
- Experience with lineboring and heavy equipment repair is an asset.
- Ability to read andinterpret technical drawings and blueprints.
- Strong knowledge ofmachining practices, materials, and tolerances.
- Leadership orsupervisory experience in a machine shop environment.
