Job Description

About the Role:


Acts as primary support to the Manager of Community Planning in fulfilling the mandate of the Community Planning Section of the Planning and Building Services Department. Land Use Policy (including Community Improvement policies and programs), Zoning, Growth Management and Land Development review and approvals are key areas of responsibility.


What You'll be Doing:



  • Land use policy development, review, assessment and monitoring, including but not limited to:

    • Areas of further review as directed by the Garden City Plan

    • Various secondary plans initiated by the City, or others

    • Official plan updates to achieve conformity with the Regional Official Plan.



  • Participate in joint policy reviews with other jurisdictions including the Region, other municipalities and agencies.

  • Process land use development applications in accordance with the Planning Act, including pre-consultation, application review, resolution and negotiation of issues.

  • Prepare recommendation reports to Council.

  • Prepare and present evidence, as need be, to the Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT) on appeals.

  • Represent the department on a wide range of committees both internal, external and Committees of Council.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the department, with other municipal departments, with the Region and other outside agencies.

  • Provide input on the City’s Community Improvement Programs including program review, implementation and monitoring of results.

  • Provide input on the efficient and effective management of data within the AMANDA property management system.


What's Required:



  • A university degree in Planning, Geography, Urban Studies or related discipline.

  • Full membership in good standing with the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) and Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI) (or equivalent from another province).

  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in a municipal planning environment.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Ontario Planning Act, and working knowledge of related legislation including the Municipal Act and Ontario Building Code.

  • Current knowledge of related trends and emerging best practices.

  • Excellent research skills and project management abilities.

  • Exceptional coaching, supervisory and leadership skills.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with excellent presentation skills.

  • Well-developed customer service skills with the ability to liaise with key internal and external stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated commitment to enhancing a safety culture and a culture of continuous improvement.
