Job Description
Primary Purpose: The Agronomic Crop Imaging Lab (ACI Lab) at the University of Saskatchewan is seeking motivated summer students to join our research team as Drone Operators. Successful candidates will support multiple ongoing research projects by operating drones over agricultural research fields in the Saskatoon area.This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in agriculture, engineering, computer science, environmental science, geospatial technology, or drone operations to gain hands-on field experience in applied research.
Nature of Work: Fieldwork with some deskwork required on bad weather days
Typical Duties or Accountabilities: The drone operators spend their days as a group, collecting drone imagery data over various agriculture research plots near Saskatoon. Most of the plots must be imaged weekly throughout the growing season.
Operate drones using automated flight plans over agricultural research plots
Assist with field data collection and equipment setup
Perform basic equipment checks and maintenance
Follow established safety and research protocols
Support the research team with additional field-related tasks as required
Education: Undergraduate registered in Post-Secondary
Licenses: A valid class 5 driver's license is a necessity.
Experience: No prior drone experience is required — training will be provided.
Skills:
Comfortable working outdoors for extended periods in physically active roles
Physically able to walk on uneven terrain and lift equipment (up to ~30 lbs)
Interest in technology, agriculture, or research
Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
Problem-solving ability and attention to detail
