Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Ophthalmic Medical Aide generates important preliminary information to be used by the ophthalmologist; reviews patient status, performs medical tests, ensures cleanliness and confidentiality, and assists in patient care.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Education: High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED)

Experience: Excellent communication skills to follow physician instructions and courteous qualities to interact with patients. Patient confidentiality is imperative.

Computer Skills

Good computer skills to input patient data. Able to navigate between screens: able to accurately enter data.

Essential Functions Statement(s)

  • Reviews patient charts to ensure completeness and accuracy of information. Performs testing required by type of exam scheduled, patient complaint and history.
  • Documents testing when a patient arrives to ensure that all necessary pre-testing is completed on-time and properly.
  • Ensures that the history sheet is accurately filled in, records visual acuity and dilates pupils if necessary. Is able to perform visual field testing, optical coherence tomography, auto refraction, and taking intraocular lens measurements.
  • Administer eye drops as ordered by the physician.
  • Prepares office for patient examination by replenishing supplies, forms and information sheets, disinfecting machinery, instruments, patient chairs, and doctors' desks.
  • Ensuring patient confidentiality and patient respect and dignity.
  • Practices health and safety when handling patients and optical equipment.
  • Assists with in-office procedures of eye injections ensuring proper informed consent is obtained, sets up and cleans up from procedures.
  • Assists in out-of-office procedures by ensuring informed consent with pre-operative packages and ensuring that patients have all necessary forms and information before surgery.
  • Assists in training of other Ophthalmic Medical Aids.
  • Assists with patient education.
  • Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of exam rooms during the work day and at the end of the day.
  • Complies with all practice procedures and protocols.
  • Maintains a positive attitude consisting of cooperation, self-motivation, courtesy, and professionalism.

Job Types: Part-time, Permanent

Pay: From $18.90 per hour
