Legal Counsel
AtkinsRéalis is one of Canada’s largest private sector nuclear engineering groups. We have been providing a wide range of services to the nuclear industry in Canada and around the world since for more than 60 years. We are proud to be the steward of Canadian CANDU nuclear technology.
AtkinsRéalis is seeking a Toronto-based legal counsel to support and advise its CANDU Energy business unit. CANDU Energy is the OEM of Canada’s indigenous pressurized heavy water nuclear reactor technology and specializes in the design and supply of nuclear reactors, as well as nuclear reactor products and services, both domestically and abroad.
The transition to net zero and increasing demand for secure sources of energy have sparked a nuclear renaissance. CANDU Energy is uniquely placed to leverage its capabilities in responding to this call, be it in the spheres of nuclear new build (in respect of both conventional and small modular reactors), reactor operations and life extensions, as well as waste management and reactor decommissioning. We are pleased to welcome a pragmatic, business-minded lawyer into a permanent position within the legal team to help our growing business capitalize on an exciting pipeline of opportunities.
We are looking for someone who has experience working for a leading private practice law firm and/or who has relevant in-house legal experience. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a variety of matters including reviewing, negotiating and drafting contracts, setting up consortia and joint ventures, advising on dispute avoidance, dispute resolution, assisting with the protection and commercialization of intellectual property and advising the business on integrity-related matters.
Location: Mississauga, ON.
Your role within the team:
- Acting as a business partner to CANDU Energy, including its commercial and management teams.
- Reviewing, negotiating and drafting customer contracts including contracts to provide engineering and design, project management, procurement and site execution services.
- Advising on collaborative agreements including memoranda of understanding, teaming agreements and consortia and joint venture agreements.
- Evaluating disputes and advising on dispute resolution strategy and managing the resolution of claims with the businesses, litigation team and external insurers.
- Advising on the protection of intellectual property and intellectual property licensing matters.
- Attending commercial meetings, gated risk reviews (bid go/no go) and other business reviews.
- Assisting in the maintenance, development and drafting standard terms and conditions and policies, procedures and guidance notes.
- Liaising with other corporate functions (Tax, Treasury, Insurance, Company Secretary, Integrity) to ensure compliance with corporate governance requirements.
- Training colleagues within the business on legal/commercial matters and recent developments.
Location: hybrid working from both our Sheridan Park campus in Mississauga and at home.
