Our client, a prominent importer and distributor of building and construction materials and a market leader in their sector in Canada, is undergoing a significant phase of growth and innovation. With annual sales volume exceeding $100M, a new Private Equity ownership group, and a robust financial standing, the company is poised for operational enhancements and strategic expansion, including potential mergers and acquisitions.

In this newly created role, the company is looking for a dynamic and experienced Head of Finance to play a pivotal role in shaping the financial trajectory of the organization. In collaboration with the new President, the Private Equity group, and the leadership team, the Head of Finance will provide hands-on financial management and strategic guidance, while enhancing the reporting processes to fortify the company’s foundation for future growth.

The Head of Finance is expected to bring expertise in establishing a solid finance and accounting infrastructure to scale the business. Developing KPI’s and management reporting, overseeing the FP&A function and budgeting process, while streamlining the month-end close process, are key short-term expectations. In the longer term, the Head of Finance will implement a new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system amongst other important initiatives.

This role will drive transformation within a growth-oriented environment and will entail:

  • Financial Strategy and Leadership:

  • Work closely with the President and Private Equity group to align financial strategies with organizational goals.
  • Provide hands-on financial leadership, acting as a strategic partner to drive growth and innovation.
  • Dealing with the bank and lenders while managing cashflow and the ABL.
  • Report and Dashboard development:

  • Establish a robust finance and accounting infrastructure to support scalable business operations.
  • Develop key performance indicators (KPIs) and management reporting systems.
  • Oversee the FP&A function and budgeting process; streamline the month-end close process.
  • Transformation and Efficiency:

  • Identify opportunities for process automation, manage enterprise risks, and lead change management activities.
  • Drive transformation within a growth-oriented environment.
  • Team Leadership and Development:

  • Lead and mentor a finance and accounting team, emphasizing efficiency, accuracy, and professional development.
  • Audit and Compliance:

  • Supervise external audits, own the valuation process, review financial statements, and address technical accounting issues.
  • Collaborate with external partners to oversee tax and compliance requirements.
  • Future endeavours:

  • Spearhead the eventual implementation of a new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system
  • Be directly involved in anticipated strategic M&A activities

To be considered for the role, you will have:

  • Designation: A CPA designation; CA or public accounting experience is beneficial.
  • Industry Experience: Previous experience in wholesale distribution, ideally B2B
  • Company Size: Experience working with both small to mid-sized growing companies
  • Agile and Collaborative: Detail-oriented, proactive self-starter with a commitment to excellence, a collaborative approach, and a drive for continuous improvement.
  • Hands-on Approach: Willingness to lead by example, demonstrating a hands-on approach rather than relying solely on delegation.
  • Communication: Strong ability to communicate financial information clearly and understandably for individuals at all levels.

This presents an exciting opportunity for a finance leader who has successfully led change and transformation within a fast-paced medium-sized business. The company, headquartered in Brampton, ON, operates across Canada, and due to its collaborative culture, the role requires in-office presence five days per week.

Interested candidates are encouraged to apply promptly for consideration.
