Commercial Designer - Lumber, Trusses & Floor Systems
Location: Alberta
Compensation: $75,000 - $95,000 Base + Bonus + Benefits
Our client, a respected and growing building materials manufacturer in Alberta, is seeking a Commercial Designer specializing in roof trusses, engineered wood products (EWP), and floor systems. This role supports commercial, institutional, and large multi-family construction projects across the province.
This is an excellent opportunity for a technically strong designer who understands structural framing, thrives in a deadline-driven environment, and wants to work on complex commercial builds within a stable and well-established organization.
The Role
The Commercial Designer will be responsible for designing structural wood components including roof trusses and floor systems for commercial and large-scale residential projects. You will work closely with sales, estimating, engineering, and production teams to ensure designs are accurate, efficient, and compliant with Alberta building codes.
This role plays a key part in supporting revenue growth and ensuring projects transition smoothly from concept through production and installation.
Key Responsibilities
- Design roof trusses, floor systems, and structural framing layouts for commercial and multi-family projects
- Interpret architectural and structural drawings to develop engineered wood solutions
- Utilize industry design software (MiTek, Alpine, Javelin, Estima or similar)
- Ensure compliance with Alberta Building Code requirements and engineering standards
- Collaborate with sales teams to optimize designs and provide technical support
- Prepare material take-offs and assist estimating as required
- Manage revisions, change orders, and project timelines
- Support production and field teams with technical clarifications
- 3+ years of experience in truss, EWP, or structural wood design
- Strong understanding of commercial framing and load calculations
- Proficiency with truss and floor design software (MiTek, Alpine, Javelin, Estima or equivalent)
- Ability to read and interpret architectural and structural drawings
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Commercial project experience preferred
