The Director of Construction Health and Safety is to oversee and manage all health, safety, environment and wellness functions that occur in the project and service operations. They work in a peer team of area managers to help guide and lead the regional managers of safety programs and safety controls and administration.

Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Oversee the day to day operations of the HSE regional managers in their activities related to the safety programs of their regions including specialist and coordinator activities such as:

  • Inspections
  • Investigations
  • Safety plans
  • Field level communications
  • Field level training
  • Manage the workloads in each region with the HSE teams
  • Ensuring all accident investigations are conducted by the health and safety department thoroughly and effectively
  • Following up with all workplace investigations to ensure necessary corrections to the work processes have been implemented and documented
  • Review and manage the expenses of direct reports
  • Manage the statistics and data related to field operations cooperatively with peer team.
  • Manage the staff review process annually within the PDP process
  • Manage the budget for field operations with the peer national managers and VP of Employee Health & Safety
  • Develop and present field level quarterly meeting presentations or oversee the presentation of such in each region
  • Liaise with the HSE National Services teams to ensure alignment and collaboration
  • Support the business services lines (IT, finance, purchasing etc) in the support of the field with respect to safety.
  • Providing all levels of the company with advice related to health and safety matters, legislative requirements and best practices in the field
  • Representing Modern in matters of health and safety with the government, health and safety associations and other outside agencies and organizations
  • Ensuring all health and safety matters in the field are addressed and rectified
  • Providing advice and guidance to senior management on all health and safety concerns
  • Providing leadership and support to the business development team and senior management through all health and safety processes
  • Performing other duties as required or requested by operational executives
  • Support and contribute to the peer team for the development and benefit of the safety program nationally

Qualifications and Job Requirements:

  • Post-secondary education in a related field
  • Previous 10+ years leadership experience in Health & Safety
  • Previous 3-5 years experience working in the construction industry would be a strong asset
  • Credentials to support skillset
  • Demonstrated competency with Microsoft office including: Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Effective communicator with the ability to develop and sustain productive working relationships with employees, subcontractors and other stakeholders at all levels
  • Well organized with an ability to effectively set and manage competing priorities
  • Sense of prioritization and drive to succeed
  • Must be comfortable working within a deadline driven fast paced environment
  • Resourceful, energetic and able to manage multiple priorities
  • Strong team player with the ability to operate independently with confidence
  • Driver’s license and the ability to travel to job sites with own vehicle
  • Licenses including, but not limited to: Driver’s license, WHIMIS, First Aid/CPR, Working at Heights, any other professional designation to carry out jobs successfully.
