Job Title: Autism Counsellor

Position: Full-Time Contract – 6 months (40 hours / week)

Pay: $29,258 / 6 months

Start Date of Employment: ASAP

Reports to: Interim Program Manager

Position Summary


The Autism Counsellor is responsible for assisting in facilitating learning and development of a variety of skills for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in a variety of settings. The successful incumbent fosters cooperative social behaviour to assist clients in forming satisfying relationships with others, and may work in individual and/or group formats to enhance social skills, life skills, communication skills, self-regulatory behaviour, and independent support needs. Skills may be taught through 1:1 instruction, structured and/or informal group learning opportunities, and recreation and/or leisure activities. Services may be delivered in a variety of settings, including community-based groups, daytime and evening programs, and independent and/or supported living/residential situations.


Job Responsibilities



  • Direct skill-building support: Provide 1:1 and group-based learning opportunities to develop social, communication, life, self-regulation, and independence skills through structured activities and recreation/leisure.

  • Program planning & leadership: Take leadership and initiative in planning, implementing, and facilitating adult groups, including coordinating activities and ensuring programming aligns with client goals.

  • Family & stakeholder collaboration: Communicate and collaborate with families, and liaise with professionals and community agencies to support coordinated service delivery.

  • Goal tracking & progress updates: Communicate with families regarding goals, progress, and future planning as appropriate.

  • Program evaluation: Participate in ongoing evaluation and appraisal of the effectiveness of activities and programs, and contribute ideas for continuous improvement.

  • Flexible service delivery: Work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and overnight sleep shifts, as required.

  • Transportation: Drive agency vehicles as required to support programming and client participation (where applicable).


Qualifications



  • Diploma or Degree from a recognized community college or university in Autism Spectrum Disorders, Behavioural Sciences, Psychology, or equivalent; and/or specific professional knowledge and experience working with individuals with ASD.

  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.

  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

  • Valid G driver’s licence and willingness/ability to drive agency vehicles.


Additional Information



  • This role includes flexible scheduling and may involve evenings, weekends, and overnight sleep shifts.

  • Work may occur across multiple settings (community groups, daytime/evening programs, and supported living/residential environments).
