Job Description
The right candidate will have 1 – 10+ years of call. Counsel to the Auto Fund provides legal advice to support policy development and business operations, as well as providing legal opinions and conducting litigation for cases of moderate to high complexity. Auto Fund Counsel primarily supports Saskatchewan’s compulsory auto insurance program, providing legal advice on statutory benefits, appearing before The Automobile Injury Appeal Commission, and contributing to legislative reviews and drafting.* A Law degree from an accredited post-secondary education institution.* Membership with the Law Society of Saskatchewan, or eligibility to become a member.* 1 – 10+ years experience in the practice of law.* **Seniority/Experience :**1–3 years call to bar, junior-level* **Wage (plus competitive benefit package):** $90,116 - $120,147* **Seniority/Experience :** 4–10 years call to bar, mid-level* **Wage (plus competitive benefit package):** $109,052 - $145,411* **Seniority/Experience :** 10+ years call to bar, senior-level* **Wage (plus competitive benefit package):** $122,139 - $162,859* Comprehensive understanding of civil litigation, administrative law, and insurance law, including relevant statutes and regulations.* Familiarity with court procedures, legislative frameworks, and compliance requirements impacting corporate practices.* Awareness of SGI’s business operations, insurance products, and risk management principles.* Strong analytical and research skills to interpret legislation, assess liability, and prepare detailed legal briefs.* Effective advocacy and negotiation skills for court proceedings, mediations, and settlement conferences.* Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex legal concepts clearly and concisely.* Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, resolve legal issues, and develop litigation strategies.* Capacity to manage complex files, prioritize competing demands, and meet deadlines under pressure.* Commitment to fostering a culture of leadership, accountability, and continuous improvement, while building collaborative relationships across teams.* Reviews claims files and provides adjusting staff or managers with critical legal analysis in relation to issues of liability and quantification of damages together with any evidentiary impediments to success of litigation.* Coordinates litigation strategies and timelines on litigation files.* Meets with and advises clients, witnesses and expert witnesses (both internal and external) in relation to procedural and substantive aspects of their testimony at discovery, at the Appeal Commission or at trial.* Directs and conducts further investigations in order to obtain further evidence in support of the litigation.* Prepares pleadings (claims and defences as necessary).* Obtains, organizes and vets documents for legal production.* Attends court for any necessary interim application required to facilitate orderly resolution of the litigation.* Attends discovery, the Appeal Commission and court in advancing and defending the corporation’s legal position.* Attends mediation, informal settlement negotiations and judicial settlement conferences and advises clients in relation to settlement issues.* Assists the legal team in coordinating and organizing legal precedents and provides a supervisory role with the paralegals in matters relating to recovery actions or Small Claims.* Provides seminars to internal clients on key aspects of the law which impact on their business practices.* Maintains a working knowledge of insurance practices, and in particular, the legal aspects which impact on the corporation’s lines of business.* Attends internal and external legal education and business courses to develop expertise in each of those areas.* Maintains familiarity with existing insurance law, and other areas of the law which affect the company’s business pursuits.* Assists in developing and conducting internal training seminars and materials for internal clients.SGI has offered affordable insurance products and great service to our customers since 1945.
