Hours -This position is a full-time, client-facing position. The work week is Wednesday to Sunday and so includes weekends. The position requires availability on weekends on a regular basis.

Rate of Pay: $31.93- $35.65 (Starting salary will be determined by factors such as relevant experience, qualifications, internal equity, and market conditions)

How You Will Make an Impact

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Addictions Counsellor works as a member of a dynamic team of individuals to assist in enhancing the dignity and quality of life in the lives of adults who experience problematic substance use, other addictions as well as the effects of homelessness within our community. At all times the Addictions Counsellor uses all available resources to provide the best service possible.

The Addictions Counsellor will demonstrate a compassionate, non-judgmental and patient demeanor when working with clients to develop a level of trust, so they feel secure in being supported to reach their highest level of skill development possible. This level of trust will be established and maintained by involving the client as much as possible in discussion around their goals and recovery process.

  • Establish a comprehensive assessment and a service plan with tenants including referrals, as appropriate
  • Supports activities geared toward establishing and maintaining healthy lifestyles with a particular emphasis on, relapse prevention, community engagement, and life skills
  • To provide, encourage and assist tenants in maintaining their housing in the community by providing opportunities for skill and resource building
  • To provide direct programming as needed by tenants, i.e. harm reduction strategies, life skills programming, daily living skills development, conflict resolution, crisis intervention and prevention, supportive counseling, advocacy, referrals, reducing social isolation, budgeting, community building, case management (if no formal agreement exists with an agency) educational and vocational community opportunities
  • Develop and maintain cooperative and collaborative relationships with other health and social service providers to ensure access to services for tenants
  • Work with Program Manager to assess referrals to the program for eligibility and work closely with the referring partners and agencies
  • Document aspects of work with tenants accurately and in a descriptive manner that meats standards set out by employer or regulating body
  • To maintain records of service statistics, client records and program records as directed
  • To be on call for coverage during the week and for weekends on a rotational basis
  • To provide service in a dignified, culturally competent and respectful manner that reflects the charism of Good Shepherd and which reflects an integrated anti-racism/anti-oppression framework.
  • Consistently presents Good Shepherd and its services in a positive manner and adheres to customer service guidelines and procedures as established by Good Shepherd
  • Promote services based on the principles of trauma informed recover,
  • The Addictions Counsellor is responsible for participating in Good Shepherd's Health and Safety programs, procedures and work in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations to minimize risk to clients, staff and others as well as to the property of the Good Shepherd.

What You'll Bring to Our Team

  • University degree in social work, nursing, occupational therapy or similar professional degree preferred as well as an addictions certificate from a recognized college and three years' work-related experience with persons who live with problematic substance use and homelessness. Applicants may also be considered with other combinations of education and experience.
  • Proficient computer skills including MS Outlook, Word, electronic health record systems, DATIS, or equivalent software programs
  • Knowledge of the social service system and community resources in the City of Toronto
  • Expertise providing counselling and case management to individuals who are experiencing or have experienced a complex history of substance use such as motivational interviewing, CBT, etc.
  • Familiarity with assessment tools i.e. ADAT, GAINS, OCAN an asset
  • A working knowledge of best practices with regard to substance use, harm reduction, trauma, and the therapeutic relationship
  • Crisis intervention skills, with well-developed problem-solving abilities and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt in a fast paced and changing work environment as well as excellent communication and organizational skills
  • CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to recertify annually
  • A driver's license and clean driver's abstract is recommended
  • Fluency in a language in addition to English is an asset
