WILDLIFE and STEWARDSHIP TECHNICIAN –
LAND USE, NATION BUILDING

JOB SUMMARY:
The Wildlife and Stewardship Technician will assist the Wildlife and Stewardship Manager in working towards certain goals of the Wildlife and Stewardship Office and the Lands and Resources Department, by the following.
- Work towards stewardship goals as stated in the Six Nations of the Grand River (SNGR) Community Plan.
- An active member of the Consultation and Accommodation Process (CAP) Team by following and implementing the CAP Team Policy; including, negotiating accommodation agreements, and implementing the environmental levy.
- Review and comment on technical documents including environmental assessments.
- Network with government, community organizations, landowners, partners, etc.
- Respond to concerns from community members.
- Administer Shipman letters; and facilitate hunting certification.
- Conduct routine monitoring and maintenance of ecosystem services (i.e. LDD moth control, rabies vaccination programs).
- Locate and apply for funding for projects and maintain budgets.
- Implement projects and studies that identify and address environmental issues.
- Participate in ecosystem restoration strategies.
- Maintain long-term population monitoring data, particularly for Species at Risk (SAR).
- Analyze data and prepare articles and reports as required.
- Provide educational opportunities for community members and other residents of the watershed.
- Collaborate with Kayanase when required.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate of a college diploma or undergraduate degree in Conservation Biology, Wildlife Biology, Ecology, Zoology, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, Habitat Restoration, Indigenous Studies or similar and one -two (2) years of related experience. Other experience/qualifications may be considered provided the applicant demonstrates the ability to perform tasks. Training will be provided for core tasks.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION: Wildlife and Stewardship Technician
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
Reports to and works under the direction of the Wildlife and Stewardship Manager, Lands and Resources Department and/or the Assistant Director and Director of Lands and Resources Department.
PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION:
The Wildlife and Stewardship Technician will assist the Wildlife and Stewardship Manager in working towards certain goals of the Wildlife and Stewardship Office and the Lands and Resources Department, by the following.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
CAP TEAM RESPONSIBILITIES
- Attending external and internal CAP Team meetings.
- Assist in responding to Grand River Notification Agreement (GRNA) notices, specifically from the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA);
- Review and provide comments for technical documents including environmental assessments and present those comments in team or individual meetings.
- Lead on SAR comments.
- Attending workshops with an environmental focus.
- Obtain knowledge of SNGR History and a working knowledge of current litigation.
- Implement the environmental levy.
- Assist in presentation to Municipalities, Federal and Ontario Ministries, Universities and Colleges, and proponents/developers.
Wildlife and Stewardship Office Responsibilities
General
- Ensure information relevant to wildlife, plants, and trees in Six Nations' Carolinian Forest is kept current.
- Participate in various off reserve working groups.
- Knowledge in hunting rights, draft Shipman letters and facilitate training for hunting.
- Connect and meet with Conservation authorities in Six Nations' Treaty Terrirtory.
- Participate in turtle rehabilitation programs.
- Knowledge of current legislation/policies.
Assisting in Monitoring Grand River Watershed Activities Functions
- Responding to information on issues arising concerning the Grand River watershed.
- Gathering and reviewing data related to wildlife and Grand River watershed issues.
Other watershed issues as required.
On Reserve Projects
- Participate in ongoing projects/studies (i.e. AFSAR, ELC).
- Collaborate with Kayanase on joint projects.
- Continue to update and add to on reserve environmental and wildlife data.
Community Engagement
- Review technical documents and project information.
- Draft FAQS and related documents.
- Participate in community meetings.
- Assist in mail outs.
- Assist in advertisements (newspapers, social media, radio, etc.).
- Other related activities.
Communication Functions
- Electronic storage, indexing and retrieval of records.
- Respond to notifications received.
- Keep the record of notifications and other statistical information updated.
- Assist in preparing updates, correspondence, reports, and briefing notes as needed.
- Participate in preparation for presentations and meetings as required.
- Effectively communicate with community members and relevant agencies.
Administrative
- Assist in maintaining files and records of all correspondence related to projects involved.
- Assist with work plan and reports responses to funding sources according to guidelines.
- Assist in proposal writing searching out other sources of funding for further programming.
- Lead on providing training to other Wildlife and Stewardship Technicians.
- Ensure proper filing of documents electronically and/or hardcopy.
- Process mail and/or electronic mail in a timely fashion.
- Completion of log in/out sheets as required.
- Perform work functions in accordance with SNGR Elected Council policies and procedures.
- Ensure submission of documents to the Records Department in accordance with the Records Management Policy, as required.
- Attend meetings as required: staff meetings, committee meetings, council meetings and or political portfolio meetings.
- Attending training/workshops as required.
Other Functions
- Perform other related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor and/or Director.
- Perform projects as assigned.
- Perform political tasks assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work requires high degree of self-direction and motivation. The position is subject to demands, deadlines; interaction with the Public; ability to prioritize tasks; and maintain confidentiality. The normal working station is the Six Nations Wildlife and Stewardship Office. Work may require travel and unscheduled hours.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
With the Wildlife and Stewardship Manager:
Receives direction and guidance. Discusses plans, priorities and interacts to ensure tasks are done efficiently and effectively. Receives instructions and supervision.
Familiar with Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council policy and procedures.
With the Community and other Staff Members:
Represents and promotes Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council Administration in a courteous, cooperative, and professional manner.
Active member of the Consultation and Accommodation Process Team
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Educational Requirements:
- Graduate of a college diploma or undergraduate degree in Conservation Biology, Wildlife Biology, Ecology, Zoology, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, Habitat Restoration, or similar and one (1) to two (2) years of related experience.
Other Preferred Skills:
- Ability to review environmental assessments an asset.
- Willing to take the hunting license course.
- Experience in word processing, internet, and e-mail essential.
- Must possess good verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to readily access data, material, and information from storage.
- Ability to read maps and take field notes.
- Knowledge of GIS is an asset.
- Ability to work with and identify wildlife.
- Must possess skills in the operation of all office equipment.
- Knowledge of SNGR rights an asset.
- Possess initiative and self-direction.
- Ability to take direction well, team player.
- Must be trustworthy, reliable and maintain confidentiality.

Errors in carrying out duties could result in loss of credibility, poor public relations and misinformation being provided. Errors could result in embarrassment to the Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council, community and administration; loss of public confidence and unnecessary conflict leading to lack of trust.
